Portal Rings

Date: Spring 2022
Materials: Brass & Silver
Dimensions: individually 2 in x 2 in x 2 in

Artist Statement:

Inspired by the notion of magical portals and doorways to other dimensions, I wanted to explore how small, everyday items can teleport us. Maybe these objects will spark a memory for us to revisit, or maybe it will be a threshold passed over to enter a creative mindset. While these works are functional rings, their design allows for more versatility and can be looked at or looked through. What will you see on the other side of the archway – your fantasy perhaps? When it is worn as a ring you look into the work to see steps descending, but descending to where?

I imagine these pieces to be balanced reflections of each other, as evident in the material used (silver steps with brass arch and brass steps with silver arch). This provided some contrast when looked at individually, but when looked at together, I see these as connected portals. The back of the pieces is simply flat, I imagine that the archways create a wormhole for thoughts, dreams, intentions, energy to travel through.
