“ Austerity, poverty, necessity. From the humblest definition of shelter in the modern world, humans will find a way to persevere. With those dwellings stripped of pretense, amenities, and often safety, they still constitute a home, and for those residents who inhabit those spaces, they are sacred. “Heroes Live Here” is a representation of these structures, and the communities they make up. The vibrant modes of expression that can exist while surrounded by constricted spaces and swelling populations. Even in the most unlikely scenarios, the need to adorn, to claim as one’s own, and call home is so very human. Inspired by the communities of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Dharavi in Mumbai, India, and Mexico City, Mexico, a rising monolith of color, texture, and congestion. Ramshackle structures serving various purposes are overlaid with signage, advertising, graffiti, and power lines, growing like a vertical hive swarming with life. Centered atop a black square measuring 8 feet by 8 feet (64 sq ft); the average dimension between the principal cities of Sao Paulo, Mumbai, and Mexico City per person of living space. This footprint drives at just how small a space humans are forced to exist in, and find the courage to live by those truths.

The making of this installation was made possible by the collective efforts of all the artists involved in equal measure, much like the communities and inhabitants “Heroes Live Here” represent, it is the collective of humanity, collective effort that brings it to life.”

*I was honored to be a part of the collective of artists to bring this visionary work to life.
